The Hoffman Effect

Cancer cells in many tumor types show an unusually high dependence on external (dietary) methionine — a phenomenon researched by Prof. Robert M. Hoffman (UCSD / AntiCancer Inc.) and sometimes called "methionine addiction." Restricting dietary methionine has been studied preclinically and in a growing number of published clinical case reports as a way to selectively stress cancer cells, sometimes alongside chemotherapy.

This is an early-stage, actively-researched area — mostly preclinical studies plus individual case reports, not large randomized controlled trials. It is not part of standard oncology treatment guidelines, and no methionine-restricting drug is FDA-approved for cancer treatment. Nothing on this page is medical advice — it exists to make primary sources and calculation tools easy to find. Talk to a doctor or registered dietitian before making dietary changes, especially during cancer treatment.

Methionine Calculator & Barcode Scanner

Live USDA FoodData Central lookup — search by name, scan a package barcode, or use voice input. This tool only calculates and displays numbers; it does not set or suggest a daily limit. Every value it shows is fetched live from USDA at the moment you look it up, and it always tells you when a number is lab-measured versus a disclosed estimate.

Recipes

Meal ideas with real photographs and ingredients that link straight to their USDA FoodData Central entry — no invented nutrition numbers, ever. This section is actively being built out; the starter recipes below already live in the calculator (linked above) and pull their nutrition live from USDA rather than storing any number here.

📷 Photographed recipe cards are in progress. In the meantime, starter recipes with live USDA-sourced nutrition are available inside the Calculator — open it and click "📖 Recipes."
